30x65 Steel Building

It's not often we get to share the entire journey of a steel building from conception to completion.  With this 30x65 steel building, you get to ride along with our general manager from design through out the process to building completion.  To start with, he went through several designs trying to decide what the best fit was for his family.  Actually, he started with looking at doing a steel building home.  As he and his wife worked through the process, they realized that in order to get the look they wanted for their home, a steel building was not going to work for them.  Their next step was to build their house with traditional wood frame construction and have a separate steel building for their shop.

The shop started as a 40x75 building which included space for a couple of horse stalls along with space for storage for an atv.  As he worked through what he wanted versus what he needed, he was able to settle on a design that worked for them.  The 30x65 steel building he ended up with has some very nice features.  He opted for a 15' open bay on one end of the building which gives shelter and includes an 8x8 roll up door and a 3070 walk door.  On the side are two 12x12 doors which allows access for just about any equipment from his atv to his tractor.  Add to that a 4' wainscot around the building and a 3x3 cupola and his shop is finished out nicely.

In this illustration you can see the open bay and how it creates a porch for the end of the building.  This makes for a great covered area from rain or sun.  Since his building is 14' tall, he chose to have the wainscot up to 4'.  Another option that he took advantage of is having all of his "red iron" actually painted gray.  When he chose his colors for his building he knew that the gray primer would look much better with his gray walls than the typical red oxide primer.

In these interior pictures, you can see the insulation as well as the 3'x3' powered ventilation fan.  The  insulation is great for keeping the interior cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter as well as keeping condensation to a minimum.  The vent fan is great for those hot summer days to create a nice cross draft in the building.

Question and answers with the owner:

  • Q
Going through the process of deciding on the building you want, what were the more determining factors?
  • A
"The size of the building I needed while staying within my budget."
  • Q
Once you placed the order for the building, what steps did you go through to get prepared for delivery?
  • A
"Graded the pad, roughed in pluming, poured the slab, made sure site access would be easy for the driver."
  • Q
    What was delivery day like?
  • A
"The driver delivering the building arrived at 7:30 am.  Insulation delivery was around noon.  The erector was on site to unload and I was there to assist in inventorying my building."
  • Q
How long did it take to erect your building?
  • A
"The erector took about two weeks to put up my building."
  • Q
How long did it take to complete your building?
  • A
"It took me a couple of months to complete my building as I helped an electrician friend wire the building working only on Saturdays."
  • Q
What are some of your favorite things about your building?
  • A
"I really like the colors we chose.  I am happy I put a fan in my building - it certainly helps get the hot air out and provides good ventilation / air flow.  I'm really glad to finally have a place to store my things - having shelves, bins, containers, etc. to organize.  It is great to go in there and know where everything is located."
  • Q
What would you change about your building?
  • A
"I would have made the inset bay a little longer.  Looking back, I should have done a 40' wide building like I started with."
  • Q
Any advice for someone thinking about a Renegade Steel Building?
  • A
"Layout the building on a sheet of paper.  Try to account for everything you may want to put in your building.  Map it out so you know your big door locations are going to work for what you will be doing.  It is much easier to think it through and order the building correctly than to have a building delivered and figure out how to modify it if possible."
