What is a gambrel roof, and how does it differ from any other steel building? The gambrel roof features a symmetrical two-sided design with two roof pitches on each side. The top of the roof has a lower slope (typically 2:12 or 3:12) while the lower portion near the side walls carries a steeper pitch (5:12 or 6:12), creating the traditional barn silhouette that maximizes usable space under the roof line.

Your gambrel roof steel building is constructed with a clear span design, giving you an open floor plan with no internal columns in the way. The steel frame is engineered with four I-beam rafters that form the gambrel shape, along with three ridge caps: one at the peak and two at the transition points where the roof pitch changes. This steel framing approach delivers the structural integrity of a metal building with the look of a traditional barn.

Since the steeper pitches make the roof panels highly visible, most customers choose a color roof panel over the standard Galvalume or silver finish to complement their finished product.

Why Choose a Gambrel Roof for Your Steel Building?

A gambrel roof gives your metal building the look of a traditional barn while delivering all the strength and longevity of a steel frame. The dual-pitch design creates significantly more overhead clearance than a standard roof style, making it an ideal choice for farm equipment storage, horse barns, agricultural buildings, or any storage needs that require height inside the structure. The extra vertical space in the roof line can also accommodate a loft or mezzanine for additional storage or workspace.

Beyond the added space, a barn style steel building with a gambrel roof stands out on any property. The classic silhouette pairs well with rural and agricultural settings, and the steel construction means you get the look of a pole barn without the maintenance, pest, or fire concerns that come with wood framing. Every gambrel roof building from Renegade is pre-engineered to meet local weather conditions, including heavy snow loads and high wind ratings, so your metal barn performs as well as it looks for decades.

Renegade Steel Building Standards

PBR bearing rib illustration

PBR Roof and Wall Panels

"PBR" stands for Purlin Bearing Rib, which provides the most stable method for joining the overlap at each roof or wall panel. When fastening the lap screw, the rib gives full support for a tight seal between panels. The PBR panel is the standard panel used on the roof and side walls of every Renegade steel building, including our gambrel roof models.
steel building long life screw

Long-Life Fasteners

Self-drilling fasteners are cast aluminum zinc and include an EPDM sealing washer along with a painted cap to match the color of your panel. Renegade specifies these highest quality fasteners for both the roof and walls to support the finish warranty and protect the longevity of your metal building.

Formed Base Trim

There are many ways to finish the bottom of your steel building. The best way is formed base trim. This one-piece system installs cleaner and faster and supports the manufacturer's warranty on the wall panels. This is the base trim we spec on every building we sell.
steel building window framed opening

Framed Window Openings

There are two ways to install a window in a metal building. The shortcut is to screw a self-flashing window directly to the wall panels. The better approach is to include a framed opening that gives the window proper support for a secure fit and better weather tightness. At Renegade, we always spec a framed opening for windows to protect your finished product against the elements.
