About South Carolina
South Carolina features 127 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Charleston is one of the cities along the coast is also the largest city in the state. It is not only a popular tourist destination, but it is also a major shipping port along the east coast. The next largest city by population is also the capital of South Carolina. Columbia sits in the middle of the states at the fall line of the Congaree river. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina as well as Fort Jackson.
The state features three distinct geographical features. The Low country is made up of the coastal plains and salt marshes. The Upstate area includes the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountains regions. One interesting fact is that all of the major lakes in the state are man made.
